We have moved the web document folder to a new server for a better perfomance, and for prepration for redundancy.

Both LDEO mail servers (yes, there is a new LDEO mail server... watch
for a formal announcement soon) will be down for configuration

Many people have recently received an email asking to provide your username
and password.  Many of you have recognized this as a scam and have reported

Users with large mail boxes are having trouble connecting to lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu mail server. Some mail clients time out and indicate they can't connect.

Failure of an older system serving two home directories caused mail delays for some mail over the weekend.

Problems with internet access which started this morning have been corrected.

    The LDEO FTP server (ftp.ldeo.columbia.edu) will be off line for several hours this Friday to allow for a disk space upgrade. Please check any automatic scripts for failures.

The LDEO mail server is running very slowly at the moment. If you have a large INBOX please consider calling us to split it into smaller pieces. This will help both you and us.

The LDEO email server is up again

A power failure over the weekend is causing a problem with email. We are
working on the problem -- no time estimate yet.

The LDEO mail server still does support pine and dtmail -- you do not have to switch to another email client. You may need to make configuration changes.

Because of a power failure on Monday 9/1/08, the network resources in Oceanographty bldg is unreachable.  This is effecting some personal web pages, and local imap/pop folders to be unavailable. There is no network connections for the oceanography users at this time. We are investigating the outage. At present, there is no estimated uptime.

Chaos will be down for 30 minutes at 8PM this evening to upgrade the DNS server. The backup server should take over with minor delays.

Email slowed to a halt this afternoon. The system was allowed to quiesce at
its own pace to prevent damage to mailboxes and restarted a little after

    Email access has been slow all morning. We are investigating. Those with large (>500MB) inboxes may not be able to open their email.

There was a major power outage at LDEO Monday at 1850.  The UPS that powers our website and part of the mass store failed and took itself offline.

We are cleaning out the mail spool directory for the main LDEO mail server. Mail for inactive accounts will be saved elsewhere. We believe this change will be transparent to everyone.

Update on the LDEO email server: Mail has been restored as of 12:44AM Thursday 12/20/07. You should now be able to read and send mail.

Update on the LDEO email server: The restore is continuing. It will not finish until Saturday morning.

Mail spool filesystem corruption caused the crash this morning. We are still trying to salvage the filesystem. If this fails we will have to restore from our backups.

The LDEO email server has crashed for unknown reasons. We are investigating and more will be posted as we figure out what's happening.

Yesterday prior to the 10PM scheduled CU router replacement, the defective router crashed at about 4:40PM and our Verizon 100Mbit circuit to CU failed independently at about 5:35PM.

The 100Mbps connection between Morningside campus and Lamont is currently down. This is due to a circuit problem with our provider, Verizon.
